Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

June 20, 2014

 

The meeting of the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Association Board of Directors was held at the Cove Ridge Center on June 20, 2014 at 12 pm.  Present at the meeting were Jim Addington, Charlie Allen, Gretchen Cope, Erwin Forrest, Joe Fuller, Megan Krager, Bob McConnell, John Mullen, Ishmael Richardson, Joan Short, Ron Short and Dale Taylor.

 

President Joan Short welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order.

 

Additions to the Agenda:

There were no additions to the agenda.

 

Approval of Minutes:

Charlie Allen moved that the minutes from the February 21, 2014 meeting be approved. Dale Taylor seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously.

 

Treasurer’s Report:

Joe Fuller delivered the Treasurer’s report. A full copy of the report is filed in the Secretary’s archive.

 

Ron Short moved that the report be approved as delivered. Jim Addington seconded that motion and it was approved unanimously.

 

President’s Report:

Participation in Recent Events

Joan reported that the Association was representated at events at Wilderness Road State Park, Sycamore Shoals State Park, and Cumberland Gap National Historic Park.

She then directed everyone’s attention toward the banner that was on display in the room. She informed them that she had the banner at Cumberland Gap for the dedication of the Boone Trace and that she noticed several people looking at the banner at that event. She also mentioned that they needed to order another banner and that if anyone had any suggestions to email her or catch up with her after the meeting.

 

Website and Facebook

Joan also reported that the website would be going live shortly and that information could be added, on the Education page for example, once the site was up. She added that the facebook page was up to 525 followers and growing.

 

Bats in our Belfry

There was much discussion about the bats that were in the Blockhouse and the large amount of droppings they were leaving behind. Joan informed the Board that the park had been made aware and were planning to take care of the situation.

 

Park Report:

Ishmael Richardson reported that the Cove Ridge Center Foundation & Advisory Board had approved funding a portion of the purchase of a 12 passenger van. He added that the park had been busy through the Spring and Summer.

 

Megan Krager added that the park would be hosting a group from the Youth Conservation Corps that will work on various projects throughout the park.

 

Blockhouse Volunteer Report:

Dale Taylor thanked Joan for bringing in so many new re-enactors and volunteers. He reported that the schedule was filling up well.

 

Status of the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Interpretive Center:

Joe Fuller reported that he had spoken with Terry Kilgore in the middle of the month and that Terry informed him that he had drafted a letter to the National Guard asking them if they could work it out so that they could do the ground work sometime in the near future. Joe stated that Terry seemed to think that they were moving in a positive direction.

 

Supportive Partnering along the Trail/Path/Road/Trace

Charlie Allen distributed copies of details of a project of the Boone Trace Society. Charlie explained that it was similar to the Association’s driving tour and further explained that he thought it might be a good idea to link the driving tour into the project that the Boone’s Society had undertaken. He proposed a possible retreat in February with members from the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Association and the Boone Society in hopes of working on some sort of collaborative project. There was some interest from Board Members and Charlie stated that he would pursue the possiblity further.

 

Old Business:

There was no old business.

 

New Business:

Bob McConnell moved that the Board elect John Stafford to be Director Emeritus and an honorary lifetime member. Joe Fuller seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously.

 

Bob informed the Board that he ordered 100 copies of The Blockhouse on the Holston and that due to the increased price the Association was having to pay that he and Joe had agreed to increase the retail price to $21.95 effective July 1, 2014.

 

Joan announced that she was planning a doll-making workshop to give the women involved with the Association a chance to get together while at the same time making dolls that can be sold at events.
