Kane Gap Property Purchase
The T21 Grant previously mentioned included an additional $200,000 to purchase property in Kane Gap (the Powell Mountain gap between Moccasin and Cumberland) and develop a hiking trail through Kane Gap. In April 2003 the Association purchased 153 acres on the Lee County side of the Gap that contains a segment of the original Wilderness Trail.
The Wilderness Trail, beginning in Thomas Village and proceeding across Kane Gap to Wallen Creek valley was sponsored by the Association as a Birding trail (the Kane Gap Trail) within Virginia’s network of statewide Birding & Wildlife Trails. We were also successful in getting the five trail Wildlife and Birding loop in Southwest Virginia, opened in 2003, officially designated as the Daniel Boone Loop.
